That’s wonderful. He’s one of the small handful of drivers I have any respect for. I was actually cheering out loud for him when it looked like he was going to win coming out of the last turn, and was disappointed when that happened. Then I saw the slow motion replay of that impact right above his head and I thought he was dead. How all that fuel running out didn’t ignite is beyond me.

My thoughts exactly
When I seen the black screens come out I thought he was a goner
Tough to believe he is alive let alone standing there smiling

Wonder what changes this will bring about, NASCAR will surely mandate something to try to prevent this type of accident in the future!

GOOD FOR HIM, prayers answered. That was one if not the worst crashe with several opportunities for real problems I have ever seen.

Now, they need to reel in the aggressive rear contact that has got out of control IMO.

They do so well until the last 25 laps
Then the guys up front start blocking at 200 plus
This is when all hell breaks loose

This accident mirrored Dale E s accident only it was way worse

Had Dale been wearing a head restraint he would have likely walked away

The bumping and pushing that they have to do at these big high speed tracks is basically necessary to win. I think they need to make the front and rear bumpers more compatible (all manufactures) so they don’t get turned if it’s off just a little. Really don’t know if that’s even possible. One thing I think they really need to do is have a much more capable fire response. That truck pulling up with a couple of out of shape people carrying fire extinguishers is a joke. If all that fuel pouring out of his car had ignited this would have been horrific.

I watched the 8th place finisher on Fox News this morning talk about his impressions. Was very interesting. He took a lick from Newman’s car and sustained some minor injuries himself. One thing he said was a lot of guys were giving Blaney shit. But he said you got to understand.. guys are going 205 miles an hour on that final stretch. Their windows have been beaten up by rocks and smeared up from wiping the solution to try to clean them.. he said it’s rather foggy looking through the windscreen.. he said your basically just looking past the window just trying to get a grip on what ahead of you. Meantime as mentioned other guys are jockeying for position.. trying to pass, trying to block. It’s the final lap.. these guys have the adrenaline pumping.. their visibility is definitely a big factor in this crash I would say. On top of the sheer speed they’re traveling. Your walking a daggers edge from my perspective.. after listening to #8 finishers comments.

When you watch a slow mo replay. It looks intentional. But you definitely have to factor in.. like the difference in speed. So Newman maybe slowed back to 200 When he was blocking and blaney jockeying attempt to pass bumped him at 205. I mean shit happens when your going that crazy fast. It looks like in slow motion he’s got seconds to think. But we are talking fractions of a second.

He might have lost the race. But this guy has the spirit of nascar embodied into him. He gained at least +1 fan. This guys my hero of the month.

When Hamlin was dropped back to third he hooked up behind Blaney and starting pushing. Together like that they got a run that was coming up on Newman so fast the only chance he had was to block. At that point Blaney was along for the ride with Hamlin pushing like that and he was either going by or hitting him. Newman blocked to try to keep the lead with the finish line coming and Blaney hit him just a little off center. That was not intentional. This is the nature of plate racing at these big tracks. Nobody did anything wrong. As much as I don’t like Hamlin... he didn’t either.

As a Nascar follower, I have been a fan of Ryan Newman since his start...albeit he lives around 20 miles from me...He has earned respect on his own, damn shame this happened when he was about to win, just really glad he is alive and able to move forward. I like many others were watching this unfold, sure looked like he was going to have more than a ride to the hospital. Thanking the good Lord that he survived and hoping his recovery is speedy so he can return to his beloved sport.
Have to say that the safety equipment REALLY did it's job, shows how much thought went into design so situations like this aren't fatalities...

So cool!
He is a very outspoken proponent of designing these cars to not flip during wrecks. I am sure we will hear allot more on this.
After watching Coreys car hit him, I thought he was hurt bad.
As everyone has stated, its racing. I was sure rooting for him.
Heck, I wanted ANYONE to win other than Hamlin.

I knew it wasn't going to be good once they showed the replay of the hit at the driver window. It's amazing he wasn't severely injured or killed. I'm dumbfounded that he could be in serious condition just a couple of days ago and now ....... Ryan Newman has always been one of my favorite drivers. Hamlin, Keselowski and Logano pretty much make up the bottom of my list.

There was some speculation on Nascar Radio that the liquid coming from the wreck was not fuel. I wonder if there is anything further on that question?
