Hello everyone, please excuse this dumb question but I’ve seen differing opinions on this matter so I figured I’d ask here to get y’all’s opinions.

I will be getting tuned for E85 and I plan to drive my car to/from my home to Houston which is roughly about a 350 mile drive.

my dilemma is that there are only a few stations that carry E85 along the way and I know to expect a drastic decrease in fuel efficiency. I believe it is about a 150 mile trip from Houston to the nearest E85 station on my way home.

I feel like I should still be able to make it even if I only get 10mpg on the highway since challengers have an 18.5 gallon tank.

I have a few questions.
1.) Do y’all think I need to worry about running out of fuel?
2.) To fellow members that run E85 what’s your mpg on the highway?
3.) Lastly, I wanted to ask if y’all think it would be safe if I took one or two 5 gallon VP gas cans with me and filled them up with E85? I would store them in the trunk of course. I seem to see varying opinions on this matter.

Thank you everyone for any and all input!

I'm no E85 expert, but the trunks are not air tight.
You will get fumes.

I am sure you can, just stating the trunks are not fume tight.

As long as the gas container is good, you will never smell it

You will get 30% less but not less than 1/2 of about 22 mpg that we get from gas on the highway. That may help you. Or, remove the tune to get it home and then put it back on.

I put gas cans in the back of my Charger all of the time. They’re sealed, so just don’t spill fuel all over them and you’ll be fine.

I’ve tried to stand the containers up in my challanger trunk and they do not fit.
I would buy 3 of the VP 5gallon containers. Put some towels down in the back seat and put them there. Dont forget to buy the little hose that connects so you can fill her up. If you tighten up the containers really good the fumes don’t last long.
Don’t forget if you have time to test the E-85 everytime you fill up. I keep a bottle of water and the tester with me all the time. No e-50 goes in my tank but if you have to put it in just don’t smash on the gas till you put the good stuff back in. 10-12 miles per gallon or so.
If you just cruise and enjoy the ride you might see 13-15 mpg.
Feel free to ask anymore questions. I’ve been on the corn for over a year now and done the 4 hour trips with the containers.

Biggest worry for me is fumes from poorly sealed can, after that possiblity of rupture if there is an accident (or can is poorly secured). Unlikely, but I still look at the whole picture (it's part of my job). While not expressly illegal here in Texas in the trunk, I wouldn't speed.

Thank you, yeah I was thinking as long as I can get 10mpg on the highway I’ll be good. I’m gonna baby it all the way home.

Thank you for such a detailed reply. I do have the tester already but won’t be testing the E85 on the way home since I’m gonna baby it anyway.
I bought two 5 gallon VP jugs and figured that would be good enough for an emergency since I planned out already where I’m gonna fill up using an E85 station locator app on my phone. I’ll probably do as you said and just cover the seats and put the jugs in the back for an emergency. The last thing I want to happen is to get stranded without fuel far from home.
Also, where do you throw away the bad fuel mixed with water after you test it??

Just insert your cc and fill up the water bottle with one squeeze of the handle. Don’t fill it up all the way. All you need is 5-6 Oz or so. Then just spread out a few paper towels to dump out the fuel in the tester on the paper towels. The remaining fuel in the water bottle just dump in the gas can. Or just dump out the fuel in the tester on the ground. It’s a very small amount it will dry up. I usually dump out the fuel in the tester on the concrete away from where any cars will come close.
I try and do the best I can with the waste of the fuel.
Lol....don’t seal up the water bottle with fuel in it and throw it away.😳🙁

Get a tester like this, instant results from only an ounce of fuel. Accurate to .5 % With today’s additives in ethanol to combat its hydroscopic tendencies the baby bottle % test does not give quick accurate results, it takes hours for the separation to occur now. You can read articles on this even on Injector Dynamics web page. This unit display minus 50 equals ethanol %. Only part I don’t like about it is having to use a separate multimeter for the reading but I plan on installing a battery operated small panel meter in the units hard case which will take care of this issue. This is E85, I’ve seen it test as high as E87

That is awesome. Looks easier than doing this whenever I fill up. 👍 8CA4AE2F-1E4C-4500-805A-FD36A348C735.jpeg

Read up on the accuracy of testing today’s ethanol verse years ago before all the additives where added that keep water from separating out of the ethanol to which they drastically slow down the separation process the add water to the fuel and shake wait for the separation to occur method (water bottle testing) rely on. I read enough that convinced me to use a tester that works differently. I agree it’s cumbersome, it will all just be in the units hard case soon. Open lid, put oz of fuel in, subtract 50 and instant very accurate do I put it in my tank or not results.

I do like the little bottle though, it may be worth comparing to this testers result and hell maybe go back on the bottle lol

This Injector Dynamics Article and talking to them on the phone about fuel testing steered me away from the bottle method. ID advertises itself as a no BS company and makes some of the best injectors out there so I took their advice pretty highly.
