It was a lower cost valvetrain to the RB based hemi, no rocker shafts. The heads look remarkably similar to a big block chevy of the same era.

I have read articles about it in the past. I think Tom Hoover used his Barracuda on the street as a test mule for it way back when?

I remember reading about the Ball Stud Hemi in High Performance Mopar Mag back in the late 80's. What a cool engine. Simple and aggressive in one pkg.

I too read about this engine in the eighties. Thought it was extremely interesting. It is almost a carbon copy of the Big block Chevy. If they put a notch in the chamber for quench it would've been a dead ringer....but then they couldn't call it a hemi. Ford did the same with the '385' series (which was produced as the 429/460). The BBC is an extremely well designed engine. Super strong, excellent oiling, excellent cylinder head flow, extremely powerful and relatively compact. All while being economical to boot, compared to the Chrysler Hemi and especially Ford 427 SOHC cammer. What do they say? "imitation is the highest form of flattery".
P.S The black and white R and D photos where the motor was blown apart were even more interesting than the color ones in the article.

Close in time to things like that no one thinks "this will be valuable one day" I've seen small project hardware like that get sold for scrap.

Dodge also built a DOHC hemi to compete with the Ford SOHC. I think only one was built. I saw a picture of one and it didn't look very good.

That DOHC Hemi was on display at Carlisle 2 years ago. What a masterpiece that engine is.

If it was that good it would have been copied. It was not. The Ford engine is still being produced by a couple of different companys and aftermarket parts are being made for them.

Unlike the SOHC 427 Ford, the DOHC 426 Hemi never made it to a race track.. The SOHC Ford has short timing chain life, and having to advance 1 bank cam to deal with the chain stretch.
