So the new car shopping had me looking more closely at my financial goals and a Van Guard ad popped up with financial advisor service.

I've never considered this necessary for my style of investing (mostly all long term retirement/kids college planning with a dollar cost averaging mindset) and I am not rich enough to have so many assets that I can't keep track of it all on my own.

Anyone using one? Pros and cons?

If you hang out in this forum long enough your financial advisor will ban you from here:geek:

For you or your clients?
Both, though I am fee based...no commissions. Though, not all advisors are created equally. Most don't know anything about actually managing money. Most are like car salesman IMHO.

Careful @AeroF16 he owns a four door car but only uses two. How’s that for smart money:geek:

Vanguard seems to have a stellar reputation but that is just what I hear from people with more money than myself.

Is one company better than another when it comes to the big name guys? Any of them more personalized than the other?

If you are serious about finding someone, start with one who is a CFP. We are bound by Fiduciary obligations, so a good start. If you need anything, I can help as well. Feel free to PM with any questions. Night.

No one is perfect in all asset classes. Vanguard, Fidelity, American Funds, etc. all have their strengths and weaknesses.

How you build your portfolio is more important than which brand you use. I prefer ETFs (exchange traded funds) over mutual funds for equities, but prefer mutual funds for fixed income.

I just moved all my money out of Vanguard because they support Burn Loot Murder (so does Fidelity).

Getting a good financial planner about 12 years ago was the best thing we ever did. My wife had a good 401K and I was doing a self directed company IRA but getting nowhere. I had previously failed miserably dealing with Edward Jones Financial Advisors. Dealing with that company was a bad idea. My wife retired 5 years ago and I retired 2 years ago, virtually debt free. Do not go to someone who just wants to sell you stock. Ask around. Get a good certified financial planner who can map out what you need to do with the resources you have to live comfortably until you are at least 90. Again, it was the best think we ever did.

This ^^^. Everything starts with a game plan. That is the core of a CFP, at least for me. Thanks for sharing your experience.
